So I saw a Tweet that included a photo. Then this happened. Sorry, Walt.

Familiar Faces, Part II - C-3PO

I'm about a third of the way done with drawing this guy. He will join R2-D2 in a final, larger project later on. I left out some of the detail because it won't be necessary when I start assembling the overall image I'm working on. Up next, Threepio's torso and arms. Yikes.

Poker Tarot - Two of Clubs Color Experiment

This is the second color experiment for the Poker Tarot. While green is my favorite color, I think that keeping the clubs and spades as a single color works best. However, that doesn't mean that I won't continue to mess with the colors until I come upon a scheme that makes me quiver with delight.

Poker Tarot - Ace of Diamonds Color Experiment

While I imagine the Star Wars project, continue to invent images and their meanings for the Noo Tarot, and brainstorm on what the face cards for this Tarot-influenced poker deck, I have been trying to work out the color scheme.

My initial idea was to have all of the suits to be in different colors: hearts, red; diamonds, orange; clubs, green; and spades blue. But I may have to change that and just have the traditional -- if slightly altered -- two colors.

Presented here is my color experiment for the Ace of Diamonds. What do you think?

Familiar Faces, Part I - R2-D2

I had an idea for a fairly involved project, but I have to create some character illustrations first. Last night I spent several hours drawing an old friend. I hope the larger work turns out well. Right now it looks pretty amazing in my head.

Tech Support Haiku

So, while I was working questions on HelpOwl.com, I ran across a plea for help that had a familiar cadence. With the barest amount of editing, the bulk of the message formed a perfect haiku. Weird.

Planetary Poker - Eclipse

There's been a lot going on in the heavens lately. While watching The Universe, they showed a map of upcoming total solar eclipses, with one cutting diagonally across the United States.

I numbered this card 17 for the year of the eclipse. Because the path of totality will be within driving distance, I know exactly where I will be on August 21, 2017. Do you?

Noo Spinoolean Tarot - Queen of Pears

I call her Margaret because she reminds me of a certain former Prime Minister. The pears on the table, from left to right, are Anjou, Red Anjou, and Bartlett. I hope that tells you all you need to know.

Likelly Culcupit

There's no doubt that typographical errors can be very amusing, to which sites like DamnYouAutocorrect.com will attest. There's also no doubt that I cull humor out of places that the dross of humanity does not. So when I ran across an almost incomprehensible appeal for tech support on HelpOwl.com, what leapt at once to my mind was this.

The brand, product name, and description were taken directly from HelpOwl, as was the phrase "zizzing sounds." The rest of the bullets came from junk email subject lines in my Yahoo! spam folder.

Use only as directed. If problem persists, consult a physician. Or your spelling and grammar checker.

A final thought on Valentine's Day

I drew this in early 2005 as part of a drawing-a-day calendar project. I imported it into Illustrator for coloring, the applied Instagram-like Photoshop filters and border. I've always thought that this would make a fun Tarot card, but it'll do as a Valentine's card instead.

I hope all you lovers got chocolates, and flowers. And laid.

"Today, the World. Tomorrow, the Future."

I've invested a lot of time and effort into researching corporate brand standards and have long thought about producing my own for my artistic moniker, Spinoolean. This morning, while I was in the shower, I had an idea for a poster to promote it. The whole of the poster snapped into my mind at once and was so vivid that I almost ran to my desk as soon as my hair had been toweled to create it.

The poster's slogan came to me in the same flash as the design. I've previously flirted with registering a service mark for the brightly colored Spinoolean logo and certainly for The Hand emblem that I now use as a signature, but now I may have to pursue it for sure. No one is using "Today, the World. Tomorrow, the Future" that I can tell, and I don't want them to start!

I'd previously thought about using the O's as a design element in some way and have carried them into the name for one of my current projects, using "Noo" instead of "New."

I think this uses all of my ideas very well, and doesn't look as stoopid (ha, ha, ha) as I feared it might.

Poker Tarot - Three of Hearts

When I started working on this project, this was the first image to leap to mind. It's kind of the opposite of the Three of Swords in the Tarot, in which three swords skewer a single heart.

Last night I had an idea and wound up inventing how the rest of the numbered suit cards will appear and what colors they will be. Playing some games with this deck will be complicated by the color scheme since there's only one red suit now. Cue the maniacal laughter.

Poker Tarot - Deuce of Hearts

With Valentine's Day approaching, I thought I would revisit the Poker Tarot I started last December. I hope to have the suit of Hearts done by the holiday, but I have some pretty ambitious plans for the face cards. Stay tuned.

Super Bowl 2313

It occurred to me this morning that the Super Bowl gods didn't ask me to take down last year's "big game" drawing. I consider that license for another one.

Now I need to draw a poster that says "Censored!" just in case.

Go (insert favorite team name here)!

Noo Spinoolean Tarot - Page of Roses

Inspiration comes from funny places. I've been working on fleshing out the remaining suit cards for the Noo Tarot, focusing on Ankhs for the moment. After I posted the Four of Ankhs, I realized what today was so I decided to see if I could draw a groundhog and place it within the Noo Tarot universe. Roses was the obvious suit and the Page was the missing face card.

I drew this with the groundhog's shadow, but Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow today, so I took it back out so as to be topical for the holiday. I liked the drawing with the shadow better -- even if it means a longer winter -- so both versions are presented here.
