Noo Spinoolean Tarot - Ace of Roses

Today is the first anniversary of Spinoolean as an art blog. I had another drawing on deck for today, but I wanted instead to publish something wholly new and made today, just as I did a year ago with Cold Heart.

Thank you to everyone who looked at my drawings. I made you a flower to celebrate. I hope you like it.

Noo Spinoolean Tarot - Deuce of Pears

In the time it took me to draw this, I had an idea for another ace. Overnight, I had ideas for three new cards in two suits. Momentum is building. It's freaking me out.

Spinoolean Tarot - Three of Swords (revised)

As I continue to brainstorm on the Noo Tarot, I'm also working on revising the Spinoolean Tarot. From time to time, I'll publish a comparison of first vs. updated versions of selected cards.

Probably the most dramatic shift in design was to change the background color of Swords from a neutral to violet. I've updated the entire suit as of this time, and the original illustrations seem to leap out of the background where they didn't before.

The other major adjustment I've made is replacing my stylized signature with the Spinoolean Hand sigil. This update to all of the cards is in keeping with my desire that no recognizable characters of any kind appear in the designs.

Noo Spinoolean Tarot - The Ice Age

Late in 1986, I started drawing what I called The 1987 Universal Destruction Coloring Calendar. I finished it in February. So much for making a Christmas gift of it that year.

I made 12 illustrations -- including this one and The Volcano -- each portraying a different grisly end of the world. Some were more successful than others. November's was called "Figure 11. The Ice Age" and looked similar to this, though my expertise in pen and ink was very limited making the illustration quite clunky.

I was tempted to add a cityscape or a swimming polar bear to the foreground, but didn't want to clutter the image. When I do the pen and ink version of this sketch, I will further explore those ideas.

Noo Spinoolean Tarot - Ace of Pears

One of the things that I want to take into consideration as I sketch ideas for the Noo Tarot is balancing created suit icons versus natural ones. In the traditional Tarot, three of the four suits are technological: pentacles, cups, and swords. Only one is natural: wands. For the Noo Tarot, I want three organic suits and one technological.

I've sort of settled on a suit of either Hammers or Ankhs, but the other three are up for grabs. So far, I'm thinking about Pears, Bees, Roses, Fleur-de-lis, or Stones.

Noo Spinoolean Tarot - The Volcano

A long time ago, during the heyday of trading card games like Magic: The Gathering, I had an idea for a fortunetelling deck like the Tarot, but with interchangeable suits and Major Arcana. Working on the Spinoolean Tarot reawakened that idea and so, a couple of weeks ago, I brainstormed up almost 300 card names. I'm still working out what the suits will be and how I will portray the images, but The Volcano is the first that found expression.

I'm calling what follows sketches since they're far from final and are the rough drafts for what will come. What I hope to eventually achieve is a 78-card deck, hand-drawn in pen and ink in the style of Pamela Coleman-Smith -- the original illustrator of the Rider-Waite Tarot -- where suits or cards may be swapped to further customize and broaden the vision and usefulness of the Tarot.

Arrogant? Probably, but that won't stop me from trying.

Spinoolean Tarot - Back & Cover

Above is the card back and below is the logo and box design for the project. "The Hand" sigil turned out to be fortuitous. I'd been thinking about developing an icon to replace my stylized signature on my artwork. When I turned the hand from the aces on its side, it looked to me like a hand showing four fingers extended, and the thumb to the pinkie. This works well for me since I have a Roman numeral four after my name.
I've already begun revising the cards. Some will be easy because they just require some standardization. Others will be harder because, during the process, a new vision for them evolved. The King and Queen of Wands are two that will undergo a rather major transformation.

I've been living with this project now since the first of June and it is the first for which I feel compelled to seek publication. We'll see what happens.

Spinoolean Tarot - The Hand

I've read about Tarot decks with an extra card, the intent of which is for a sacrifice that purifies or activates the deck. I like this idea a lot. Destroying a card by fire to appease the Tarot Muses seems extreme to me though, so when I write the documentation that goes with my deck, I will employ a kinder and gentler notion. In the meanwhile, I've numbered this card 00, assigned to its own background color and portrayed the abstract hand I designed for the aces as a sigil.

But for the card back and a logo design that I will publish later, the Spinoolean Tarot is complete. Now to begin the revision process...
